About Us
Early in his career while selling office equipment, William A. Rice became involved in a safety inspection program for General Motors that involved replacing nuts and bolts on office chairs. He became intrigued with the metal edge boxes used to house the nuts and bolts because they were "readily consumed, not stored for reuse as the office equipment."
Recognizing the opportunity for repeat sales, William went to work for a New England metal box manufacturer. Once on board, he realized the need to reduce the cost of packaging in order to remain competitive, and set out to prove that a glued box could be equally strong. When his proposal was met with resistance, he left the company and set out on his own.
William founded the Rice Packaging company in 1964 in a quaint turn-of-the-century barn in Ellington, Connecticut. Over the years, several modern buildings were added to the original barn in order to accommodate the expanded operations. It is interesting to note that in 1977 William A. Rice was honored by then President Jimmy Carter and members of Congress, naming him "Small Businessman of the Year- Connecticut."
In 1985 William's son, Clifford Rice took over the day-to-day operation of the business. Today under one roof, Rice Packaging has the professional staff and the latest print-production technology needed to fulfill your custom packaging order requirements. Under Cliff's guidance the company has continued to expand our customer base to include everything from food and pharmaceuticals to publishing and industrial goods.
From the initial design process to the finished product, the focus is on you the customer.
